The Amazing Benefits of Hot Lemon Water 🍋

I am the worst of the worst in the mornings. No matter what time I go to bed, or wake up, I wake feeling horrendous. I put it down to not being a morning person but I realise that a big part of this is my unhealthy-ish lifesyle, and I’m sure stress plays a part too. As a result I crave a coffee the minute I wake up and then I don’t stop drinking the black nectar until my last cup in the evening before I go to bed. Nope, coffee doesn’t stop me sleeping — although perhaps it disrupts the quality of my sleep? Funny how I’ve never thought of that before until writing this. I have decided, as it’s January and a new year and all that, I need to improve the quality of my lifestyle, and hot lemon water is one of the perfect places to start. As we’eve already ascertained I drink way too much coffee. It even gets to the point towards the end of the day when I stop enjoying the taste of it anymore, it’s just something to do. Coffee is like a Groundhog Day drug. The first cup of the day is one of life’s great pleasures. It tastes sweet, soothing and delicious. You then spend the rest of the day chasing that memory and taste, but of course it’s illusive. It seems the more cups you have a day the more the bitterness increases.

I’m not going to cut out coffee all together, that would be crazy, but I am going to limit it to three (maybe four) a day. One in the morning, two in the afternoon and one in the evening. And to me hot lemon water is the perfect alternative. And the great news, it’s seriously good for you.

The Health Benefits

  1. The Vitamin C boosts your immune system.
  2. It also balances the pH levels in your body. Although lemons are very acidic they are actually alkaline once metabolized in the body.
  3. Lemons are high in pectin fiber, which helps fight hunger cravings – less snacking! It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.
  4. It aids digestion. The warm water serves to stimulate the gastrointestinal tract and peristalsis — the waves of muscle contractions within the intestinal walls that keep things moving. Lemons and limes are also high in minerals and vitamins and help loosen ama, or toxins, in the digestive tract.
  5. It acts as a gentle, natural diuretic. Lemon juice helps flush out unwanted materials because they increase the rate of urination in the body. Toxins are, therefore, released at a faster rate, which helps keep your urinary tract healthy.
  6. It’s great for your skin. The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes. Lemon water purges toxins from the blood which helps keep your skin clear as well.
  7. It helps to hydrate the lymph system. If you have a cup first thing in a morning, it starts the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration (obviously) and adrenal fatigue. When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue) it can’t perform all of it’s proper functions, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation etc.

The benefits are clear to see so give it a go for a week or two and see how you feel.

Thank you for reading.
